Problem
Parts that are turned or held by hand (instrument and control knobs, adjuster screws, tool handles, bit holders, thumb screws and knurled nuts) need a grip that works with oily or gloved hands, looks consistent and doesn't wear smooth. The pattern often also identifies the part as a quality product.
Solution
A diamond knurl (form profiles GE/GV, or cut BL + BR together) gives grip in every direction; a straight knurl (AA) is preferred where the part is only turned.
- Form knurling suits most steels and brass and leaves no chips; it raises the diameter slightly.
- Cut knurling produces a sharper, cleaner pattern with little diameter change and lower forces; good for thin-walled or small parts and for decorative finishes.
- Coarser pitches give a stronger grip; finer pitches a softer feel and better look on small parts.
