Fasteners & Cold Forging · Application

Thread rolling of bolts, studs and screws

Thread rolling dies form threads without removing material, giving stronger, smoother threads at high production rates.

What was needed
Round Circular Thread Rolling Dies, Infeed Thread Rolls, Through Feed Rolls
Requirements
  • High fatigue strength
  • Accurate, smooth thread flanks
  • High production rates
Result
Stronger threads produced faster and without chips.

Problem

Bolts, studs and screws for engines, chassis, construction and machinery need threads that carry high loads and survive vibration. Cut threads interrupt the grain of the material at the thread root and are slower to produce in volume.

Solution

Thread rolling cold-forms the thread with hardened dies. The material flows to follow the thread profile instead of being cut away, and the surface is work-hardened.

  • Rolled threads have higher fatigue strength than cut threads, especially on parts that are not heat-treated after threading.
  • Rolling is fast and produces no chips; the blank is turned to the pitch diameter, not the major diameter.
  • Dies are made to the thread form required: metric, inch and special profiles.

Benefits

Why it works

Higher fatigue strength

Unbroken grain flow and a work-hardened thread root.

Smooth, accurate threads

Burnished flanks for better assembly.

Fast, chip-free production

Suited to high-volume fastener lines.
